CHAPTER 10

On Monday morning, Pru had just finished scanning the returned books and was about to reshelve them when Jesse strode into the library.

Her pulse sped up as she took in his appearance. He wore dark slacks and a dark gray jacket with a blue button-down shirt, which set off his wavy dark hair and good looks. She wished that there hadn’t been a counterfeiting operation in town delaying their dinner date at the bistro.

“Enid’s fingerprints were on the note in your mailbox,” he told her.

“So she was the poison pen writer.”

“It looks that way.” He nodded. “Unless she had an accomplice.”

“What about her next of kin?” She remembered the conversation with Father Mike yesterday.

“We’re still working on that. She didn’t have a contact number for anyone in her purse or in her house that we could find, so we’ve reached out to the real estate office for her background information. She rented the duplex and had to provide references and a previous address which they said all checked out. They’re going to give us the information today and then we’ll find out where she came from and if she had family back there. So far all we know is that she moved down here from Washington State.”

“Thanks.”

“Anytime.” He smiled at her, the corners of his eyes crinkling a little. “Mitch can’t find any evidence so far that Enid’s death wasn’t a hit and run but now that we know she liked writing poison pen letters, murder is definitely a possibility. The problem is we still haven’t found a witness and so far no one has come forward admitting they ran her over accidentally.”

“So you might never find out if it was intentional or not.” She frowned.

“Don’t say that. Mitch and I are good at what we do.”

“I know.”

“As are you and Martha.” He paused. “I just don’t want to see you – or Martha – get hurt. Or Teddy.”

“I understand.”

She noticed Barbara’s questioning gaze on them.

“I need to reshelve these books.” She gestured to the cart.

“I get it.” He followed her sideways glance at her boss. “I’ll be in touch.”

Pru watched him stride out of the library, then pushed the cart toward the romance bookshelves.

The rest of the day passed quickly. The woman researching vintage purses came in again that afternoon, and Barbara was busy helping her. Pru’s thoughts turned to Martha’s talk at the senior center. She hoped it had gone well and that Teddy was a hit with the members. What was she thinking? Of course Teddy would be popular – maybe even more so than Martha?

By the time she got home, she couldn’t wait to hear how the decluttering and counterfeit money talk had gone.

Martha didn’t leave her in suspense.

“They loved it!” Martha crowed after Pru sank down on the sofa, glad to give her feet a rest. “And Teddy, of course.”

“Ruff!” Teddy danced in front of the sofa on his hind legs.

“He did that as well.” Martha pointed to him. “And they wanted him to do it again.
